How We Test Software
Our hands-on review methodology
Why Our Testing Matters
Most software review sites copy-paste marketing pages and call it a "review." We don't. Every recommendation on Savvy Picks is backed by real, hands-on testing. We sign up, we test, we break things, and we tell you exactly what we found — good and bad.
This matters because small businesses can't afford to make bad software choices. A wrong CRM migration or a VPN that doesn't protect your data costs real money and real trust. Our testing methodology exists to prevent those mistakes.
Our 5-Step Testing Process
Every product goes through the same rigorous process. No shortcuts, no exceptions.
Sign Up & Onboarding
We create real accounts — free trials, paid plans, whatever's available. We go through the exact onboarding flow you would. How long does setup take? Is it confusing? Do they bombard you with upsells? We document everything.
Feature Testing
We test every feature that matters for small businesses. For a VPN, that means speed tests across servers, streaming unblocking, and leak protection. For a CRM, that means pipeline management, email integration, and reporting. We don't just check if features exist — we evaluate how well they actually work.
Usability & Performance
A powerful tool is useless if nobody on your team can figure it out. We rate ease of setup, interface design, mobile experience, and day-to-day usability. We also benchmark performance — load times, response speeds, and reliability under real-world conditions.
Support & Documentation
We contact support with real questions and rate response time, helpfulness, and whether they actually solve the problem. We also evaluate knowledge bases, tutorials, and community resources. Good support can save a mediocre product; bad support can ruin a great one.
Value & Pricing Analysis
We compare pricing tiers, calculate true cost of ownership, and identify hidden fees. We evaluate whether the product delivers real value at its price point and compare it against alternatives. We also check for misleading discount practices or bait-and-switch tactics.
What We Evaluate
Each product is scored across five key dimensions that matter most to small businesses:
- Features & Functionality (25%) — Does it do what it promises? Are the features genuinely useful or just marketing fluff?
- Ease of Use (25%) — Can a non-technical person set it up and use it daily without calling support every five minutes?
- Pricing & Value (20%) — Is it fairly priced? Are there better alternatives at the same price point?
- Customer Support (15%) — When something goes wrong (and it will), can you get help quickly?
- Security & Privacy (15%) — Does it protect your data? Does it comply with privacy regulations?
How We Score Products
We use a 10-point scoring system with half-point increments. No product gets a score above 8.5 unless it truly excels across all dimensions. Here's what the scores mean:
- 9.0–10.0: Exceptional — best-in-class, highly recommended
- 8.0–8.9: Excellent — strong choice for most small businesses
- 7.0–7.9: Good — solid option with some limitations worth noting
- 6.0–6.9: Average — works fine but better alternatives exist
- Below 6.0: Below average — significant issues we can't overlook
Our scores are not influenced by affiliate commissions, advertising relationships, or vendor outreach. Period.
Our Editorial Standards
- Independence: We never let vendors review or approve our content before publication.
- Accuracy: We fact-check pricing, features, and specifications. If we make a mistake, we correct it promptly and transparently.
- Timeliness: We update reviews when products change. Outdated reviews help nobody.
- Transparency: We clearly disclose affiliate relationships and any limitations in our testing.
- Accountability: If a product we recommend disappoints you, we want to know. Your feedback helps us improve our reviews.
How We Make Money
Full transparency: Savvy Picks earns revenue through affiliate commissions. When you click a link like Get NordVPN 40% off and make a purchase, we receive a commission from the vendor — at no extra cost to you.
This is how most free review sites operate. What makes us different is that affiliate revenue never determines our rankings. We've turned down partnerships with products we couldn't recommend in good conscience. We only join affiliate programs for products we've tested and believe in.
We also occasionally earn revenue from digital product sales (compliance checklists, audit templates) that we create and sell directly. These products are clearly labeled and are not affiliated with the software vendors we review.
Affiliate Disclosure: Savvy Picks is an independent review site. Some links on this site are affiliate links, meaning we may earn a commission if you make a purchase through them — at no extra cost to you. This helps us keep the site running and our reviews free. We only recommend products we've tested and believe in.
